Why Yearly Family Photos Matter (And Why This Session with 3 Boys Was Pure Joy)

Hey friends!

I just had one of those sessions that reminds me exactly why I love what I do. A beautiful family of five — mom, dad, and three energetic boys — came into Mint Room Studios for a mini session, and we had the best time.

These boys were full of personality, giggles, and that perfect mix of chaos and sweetness that only brothers can bring. One minute they were cuddling up for the sweetest portraits, the next they were wrestling, laughing, and being exactly themselves. It was pure fun from start to finish, and the photos completely capture that energy.

Kids change so quickly — and that’s exactly why yearly family photos matter

If you’re a parent, you already know this feeling. One day your baby fits in the crook of your arm, and the next they’re running full speed and asking a million questions. Those little faces, the way they hold your hand, the gap-toothed grins, the way siblings interact — it all shifts faster than we realize.

When you’re in the middle of everyday life, the changes can feel gradual. But when you look back at photos from just one year ago? It’s shocking. The chubby cheeks soften, the hair gets longer, the expressions mature, and suddenly that version of your child only exists in pictures.

That’s why I always encourage families to make yearly photos a priority. Not every six months if that feels like too much, but at least once a year. Those annual sessions become a visual timeline of your family growing together. You’ll look back and see not just how your kids changed, but how you changed as parents too — the way you hold them, the way you look at each other, the quiet moments of connection that are so easy to miss in the rush of daily life.

This particular family is a perfect example. Watching three boys interact — the older ones looking out for the younger one, the playful teasing, the sudden soft moments — those dynamics shift every single year. Capturing them now means this exact chapter of their story is preserved.

Why Mint Room Studios is such a great spot for family sessions

We shot this session at Mint Room Studios in Toronto’s Junction, and it never disappoints. The natural light, the beautiful rooms, and the relaxed atmosphere make it so easy for kids (and parents!) to settle in and just be themselves. No stiff “say cheese” moments — just real connection and a lot of laughter.

Whether you’re looking for a full family session or a shorter mini, the studio space is ideal for families with young kids who need a little room to move and play.

A gentle reminder for Toronto families

If it’s been a while since your last professional family photos, this is your sign. The kids won’t stay this age. The way they fit under your arm, the sound of their laugh, the way they still want to hold your hand — these stages are temporary.

Yearly family photos aren’t about perfection. They’re about freezing the real, messy, beautiful version of your family right now so you can hold onto it forever.
