Pregnancy is simply beautiful. The way the light hugs each curve, the way you glow and radiate love for this little person you have yet to meet. Your body is nurturing a life inside you, and only you can bring this baby into the world. Mama, you are a super hero and should be celebrated! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to capture this precious moment in time, documenting the love and joy for your baby before they even arrive.
Maternity sessions are generally booked between 30-34 weeks pregnant to ensure a nice round bump. It is recommended to make your reservation 2-3 months in advance to ensure availability around this photography window. A small deposit reserves and guarantees your preferred date and time. Upon booking, we dive into the consultation and session planning, going over your taste and preferences.
The best location for a maternity session is in the studio to access all the props, accessories, and wardrobe. The studio is where all the magic happens and where I use my expertise in lighting and angles to create stunning portraits. Styling can be anything from causal to whimsical with gowns. The best part, it’s up to you. We can plan a session with just you and/or include your partner and your little ones.
What Colour Should You Wear?
The reason you’re booking this maternity photo session is to show off that beautiful bump, so make sure to wear colours that will show it off. Meaning do not wear black or navy or any other super dark colour. It hides the bump and makes it hard to see, and that’s not what you’re going for. But at the same time, you don’t want to wear bright neon colours, either. Light to medium colours will look best.
Where to Shop for Maternity Dresses
Although I do have a client closet with dresses you can borrow, you may want to get your own dress. These shops below is where I shop from for my client closet.
Another great place to get maternity dresses is at small boutique online shops. Sometimes a dress that isn’t meant for maternity can be amazing, and bonus: you can probably wear it again after you have the baby! You want to look for stretchy fabric, dresses with elastic at the waist, and a higher waistline. You also want to pay attention to if it is lined or not, because some dresses are lined, but only partway down, and it’s too short to fit a bump. In particular, I love Joyfolie dresses.
