Every year when we come around to the fall, I am always struck by the passage of time. In the life of a child, there are so many firsts – so many new things! – happening all the time. Whether your wee ones are going to school for the first time or just going into a new grade, there are so many new firsts! New interests, new friends, new growth, new learning.
My children are young, so there are lots of the traditional kinds of firsts – first steps, first pizza, first hugs, first smiles, first playdates, first birthdays. I know that these are moments that happen only once in their lives and I do my best to remember them as they go by, even if they go by so quickly.
This is one of the reasons why I am so passionate about family photography. I can see these firsts whiz by in my own life, so I try to pause and capture them with my camera as often as possible. Even getting family photos once a year helps take me back to not only the photo event itself, but that time in our lives. It’s like a time machine transporting me to a time when my oldest first started talking in full sentences or when my youngest turned one.
I hope that you’ll take a few moments this month to cherish the firsts coming up in your child’s life. Whether you journal them, keep audio clips in a notes app on your phone, or work with someone like me to commemorate those moments, be sure to find a way to cherish them for years to come.
