Many people don’t immediately think of Toronto as a beach destination, but the city offers several amazing spots for family photoshoots. Popular options include Cherry Beach in the east and Sunnyside Beach in the west.
Last year, we spent a morning capturing several families at Sunnyside, and it was incredible to see so many parents and children enjoying the session. The natural surroundings, soft sand, and water reflections make for timeless, relaxed, and joyful family portraits.
Choosing the Best Time for Outdoor Sessions
The timing of your photoshoot is crucial to achieving beautiful outdoor portraits. For the best light, aim to schedule your session during the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset.
Why Golden Hour Matters
The “Golden Hour” provides soft, warm, and flattering natural light, which is ideal for capturing natural skin tones and glowing images. While artificial lighting can be added, I find that relying on natural light produces the most authentic and timeless photos. Avoid shooting at midday when the sun is harsh, which can create unwanted shadows and make your family squint.

- Dress comfortably and coordinate colors that complement the surroundings.
- Bring props or toys for young children to keep them engaged.
